Here is a looong picture series.
All of them are from the two weeks I spent in Romania, together with my dear little sister Georgina and 10 more volunteers (dear Paula, Kipyo, Catherine, Delphine, Silvia, Andreea, Camille, Julie, Elisabeth).
The aim of the workcamp was organizing games and other leisure activities with children who live in a small village in Transilvania mountains. The village was really small, live less than thousand people, and was very badly communicated, there wasn't even one regular bus line. That made it really difficult to see more of Romania apart from Rosia Montana, the village where we were. Only a weekend we went to visit a frozen cave and that day it was really nice the walk through the fields in the mountains!
The second weekend, we were very lucky because there was a music festival in Rosia Montana, called Fan Festival. Highly recommended to those people who are in Romania by the end of August! (do not forget to bring your own tent!) It was up on one of the hills which surround Rosia Montana. There, we could drink beer, eat good food for cheap, dance, enjoy the nature, ...
I can't finish without explaining that this village is currently (since year 2000) in danger and controversy, because a canadian corporation (Gabriel Resources) wants to mine all the gold that is laying under the ground there since so many years. We were in the middle of this controversy, which have divided the population in Rosia Montana: ones support the minig company project (because the mine will generate employment), others do not (because the mining process is very polluting (with cyanure) and will destroy the natural environment there, as well as the possibility to be a farmer there.
In my opinion, we should'nt be to the service of a company that will earn so much money with the gold mining. If the romanian government doesn't stop them (they see the money and are really excited about it), public society has to stop them. Alburnus Maior association, which we were lucky enough to meet while we were there, is doing everything possible to stop them. Aquí va una laaarga serie de fotos.
Todas son de las dos semanas que pasé en Rumanía junto a mi queridita hermana Georgina, y 10 voluntarios más (queridos Paula, Kipyo, Catherine, Delphine, Silvia, Andreea, Camille, Julie, Elisabeth).
La finalidad del campo de trabajo era organizar juegos y otras actividades con niños que viven en un pequeño pueblo en las montañas de Transilvania. El pueblo era realmente pequeño, sólo viven menos de 1000 personas, y estaba muy mal comunicado, no había ni un autobús que llegase allí de forma regular. Eso hizo que pudiésemos ver poco más de Rumanía a parte de Rosia Montana (el pueblo en cuestión). Sólo un fin de semana que nos "sacaron a pasear", hicimos una larga caminata hasta una cueva con hielo en su interior, la caminata fue lo mejor del día sin duda alguna!
El segundo fin de semana, estuvimos de suerte porque coincidió con un festival de música alternativa que cada año se organiza en este pueblo, en lo alto de una de las colinas que lo rodean, y pudimos comer muy bien y escuchar música, bailar, tomar cerveza, disfrutar de la naturaleza, ... una buena despedida del resto de compañeros del campo!! El festival se llama Fan Festival, lo recomiendo a todo aquél que vaya a estar en Rumanía a finales de Agosto!!
No puedo acabar sin comentar que este pueblo está envuelto en polémica porque una corporación llamada Gabriel Resources está empeñada en extraer todo el oro que los habitantes de Rosia Montana tienen bajo sus pies, y que han tenido por muchos años. Para el que quiera saber más, puede visitar http://rosiamontana.ro/ o leer un poco más abajo donde cuento un poco el tema. Inevitablemente, nos vimos envueltos en estos temas tan complejos, que tienen dividida a la población, entre los que estan a favor de la mina (porque generará empleo) y los que no (porque el método de extracción que quieren emplear, con cianuro, es muy contaminante y destruirá el entorno natural de este pueblo y con él la posibilidad ser agricultor o ganadero). En mi opinión, no podemos ponernos al servicio de una corporación, que ganará mucho dinero con el oro extraído. Así que si el gobierno rumano no les para los pies (que no lo hace, pues se le abren los ojos al ver los billetes de los canadienses), la sociedad debe hacerlo. La asociación Alburnus Maior, que tuvimos la suerte de conocer mientras estábamos allí, lo está haciendo.
